Elisa Johns is a Los Angeles based contemporary painter who received her MFA from the Claremont Graduate University, and her BFA from the University of California, San Diego. Johns has exhibited across the United States, and in Europe. Her solo shows include Palisades, kasia kay art projects gallery in Chicago, Devotion is Enough at Skew Gallery in Calgary and Huntress at Mike Weiss Gallery in New York. She has received critical acclaim from publications including Art in America, White Hot Magazine and Beautiful/Decay magazine.
Last October Johns was interview by Nellie King Solomon for Ochi Projects. The artist discusses her recent work and its progression, landscape and the West.
Johns' haunting imagery of mythical characters and languid muses are infused with contemporary figurative style. The large open spaces within her canvases form dream-like landscapes of an epic fantasy. Both haunting and lyrical, Johns delves deep into the sublime of the western high sierra landscape. She contemplates both landscape and figure as muse and narrative mechanism.
